20.11.2004 Media Global Watch will evaluate its first two years of existence
During World Social Forum 2003, the Inter Press Service (IPS) agency, together with French newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique and other organizations created Media Global Watch. Two years after, the same organizations – plus others that joined in along the way – intend to meet again in Porto Alegre for an evaluation of their activities, with the seminar Media Global Watch: two years after, where do we go from now?
Born to be what the journalist Ignacio Ramonet defined as a “fifth power”, responsible for controlling the so called “fourth power” – the press -, after two years of existence, Media Watch already has bases in some countries like France, Italy, Brazil and Venezuela.
“The Media Watch is growing, even if slowly”, says Italian journalist Stefania Milan, from IPS. “One of the challenges it faces is the fact that it is a totally new conception of an association in terms of the composition of its members, as it doesn´t intend to congregate only the alternative kind. We want to bring journalists & other media workers, researchers & academics, as well as the common citizens together. A lot of work is still to be done towards encouraging these new kind of relations. We do not want to work only with alternative journalists, but with the widest group of media professionals.”
