1) Take part in the Global Day of Action and build the collective memory
Next saturday, January 26th, millions of people around the world will gather in more than 700 activities that will happen in more than 80 countries (as presented on www.wsf2008.net until Jan. 24th).
It's a Global Day of Action: an international journey to make our demands and show that the world can be free of war, patriarchy, sexism, enviromental destruction, poverty, militarism, privatization of public spaces and resources, imperialism, violation of human rights, restriction of expression and all kinds of oppression.
Check item 6 in this newsletter to view a list of countries and actions. Look for and participate in activities that are scheduled to happen in your city.
Besides partcipating in actions around the world during the Global Day of Action it's also important to build collective memories of this proccess.
- Use www.wsf2008.net to host images, video, áudio, news and wikis. Multimedia content can be added by any participant on an Action Space. Invite your friends to participate in your Action Space, so this collective memory can be built.
- Create news about your action, log onto www.wsf2008.net, find your Action Space and click on “Create News”. Tell the world what will happen or has happened in your action, how it turns out and any other news you want to share.
- Use your action space to collect flyers, posters, images, photos, blogs on the actions.
- Collect media clippings of newspapers articles, radio recordings, televison coverage and other content produced about GDA, put it into your Action Space and send it to media@wsf2008.net
- For more information about Action Spaces or site usage, visit the Help section in (http://wsf2008.net/eng/helpdesk) or this edition of WSF Newsletter: http://wsf2008.net/eng/node/1730.
2) WSFTV.NET is online for video on Global Day of Action
The website www.wsftv.net is online and going to be the main center for uploading and watching videos about World Social Forum 2008 and social change.
Produce your video showing what happened during the Global Day of Action in your city and upload it to www.wsf2008.tv. It's recomended that your video should not exceed 10 minutes in length.
- In order to upload videos to www.wsftv.net, it is necessary to register on the website, even if you are already registered in www.wsftv.net.
- After logging on, click on the “publish” button on the left-hand side of the screen and follow the instructions to upload your video.
- High resolution videos (formats 'mpeg2' or 'mpeg4') for pubblic screening or TV broadcast should be uploaded via FTP (write to video@wsf2008.net to request username and password).
- Any special request or help on video issues should be sent to video@wsf2008.net.
3) Forumderadios.fm is online for audio files
Besides uploading audio files to Acion Spaces into www.wsf2008.net, radio producers can visit www.forumderadios.fm to upload content. www.forumderadios.fm is a space of radios which participate in the World Social Forum (WSF). It aims to be a converging point for the actors involved in the WSF process.
4) Live tranmissions of audio and video via internet streaming
If your action is going to happen in a place with an internet connection or if you have good mobile access to the net and a camera and/or microphone, you're able to transmit live images or sounds from your action venue to the world.
This technology is called “live streaming” and there are several ways of doing it (using a website or a specific software, like VLC).
If you plan to transmit live images or audio from your city using any “live streaming” technology, please write to media@wsf2008.net informing them of: 1) the internet address where your stream will be availible, 2) a short descripion of the action it'll be covering (including the name of the city), 3) the time schedulle for your transmission (if possible in GMT).
The collected addresses will be published on the streaming page: http://wsf2008.net/eng/node/4807, making your image and sounds availible for audiences around the world.
5) Intercommunication: a simple and effective way to connect people and organisations from all over the world
In a forum event like Porto Alegre, Mumbai or Nairobi, people meet everywhere and talk together in 'real' spaces. In global day of action , beyond the feeling that there are more than 700 actions in the world, there is also a need to have communication that goes beyond physical distance.
One way to do this is instant messaging via internet, with audio and video capacity. An intercommunication initiative has been set up for this: creating intercommunication workshops in the frame of some actions around the world.
See the current contacts being prepared by the participants in that initiative in http://www.wsf2008.net/eng/node/4637. If you have a computer with internet connection and áudio and video equipment and a videoprojector to project the image onto a wall (so the whole group can see), you are welcome to join the teleworkshop activities. To do that, visit http://www.wsf2008.net/eng/node/2219 or write to intercommunication@wsf2008.net
